Bridger Bowl

* Bridger Bowl. Named after Jim Bridger, one of the first explorers of Yellowstone National Park, Bridger Bowl is a 46-year-old nonprofit ski area 16 miles north of Bozeman on State 86. In fall, golden eagles ride the air currents above the knife-edged Bridger Mountains. By winter, the 69 named runs are packed with dry powder called "cold smoke," and telemarkers sporting shovel-laden mounteering packs head for an expert slope dubbed "the Ridge." With a vertical drop of 2,000 feet, the terrain offers beginner, intermediate, and advanced skiing on 1,500 acres of groomed slopes and ridges served by seven chairlifts. Sample the Bridger Bar brownies at the midmountain Deer Park Chalet or a microbrew by the stone fireplace in the Jim Bridger Lodge. Lift tickets $33. (800) 223-9609

 Montana Snowbowl

Montana Snowbowl. Built in 1961 in the canyon between two Bitterroot Mountain peaks, the 950-acre Montana Snowbowl lies 12 miles northwest of Missoula. The area sports a vertical drop of 2,600 feet, two chairs, two surface lifts (rope tow and T-bar), 35 runs bordered by alpine firs, and sweeping views of the Missoula Valley Here University of Montana students snowboard the bowls or cozy up in the A-frame main lodge at the base of the mountain to refuel. The European-style, slopeside Gelandesprung Lodge features a hot tub and 19 rooms priced from $29. Lift tickets $29. (406) 549-9777

 Red Lodge Mountain Resort

* Red Lodge Mountain Resort. Red Lodge is nestled in the 12,000-foot Bearrooth Mountains, 60 miles south of Billings on U.S. 212 and 6 miles outside of the handsome old mining town that gives the place its name. The 40-year-old ski area started out with a chairlift and a rope tow. Today however, it boasts 1,600 acres of largely intermediate terrain, 70 lodgepole-pine-bordered runs, two high-speed quads, four double lifts, one triple lift, and the largest snowmaking system in the northern Rockies. Sip cocoa and stare at the Palisades rock formations at Line Camp--a large canvas tent with a cookstove--or indulge in barbecued hamburgers at the lodge's Willow Creek Saloon. Lift tickets $36.  Discovery Ski Area

* Ski Discovery. Near where miners once looked for gold, Butte workers and ranchers in Scotsman hats schuss down 40 runs in the Flint Creek Mountains. Views encompass the Anaconda Pintler Wilderness Area and Georgetown Lake. Situated 45 miles northwest of Butte on State 1 (the Pintler Scenic Route), the 380-acre area, built in 1973, operates four chairlifts serving gentle and expert slopes. In the lodge, Dora the cook whips up homemade cinnamon rolls and pasta alfredo. Ski packages are available through nearby Fairmont Hot Springs Resort. Lift tickets $24. (888) 678-7669 or
